For the first volume, Hammer-Purgstall produced an edition of the Persian text set in specially created Persian characters following the manuscripts in the Austrian National Library ONB NF 220a and ONB NF 220b.

The book was originally published in 1856 and is reprinted here as a starting point for the edition of the four remaining volumes of the German translation preserved as manuscripts in the archives of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The author of this important source for the history of Iran in the Mongolian period, Saraf ad-Din Di-n Abd Allah b.

Fadl Allah Wassaf of Shiraz, describes the history of his home province of Fars, covering the neighboring dynasties extensively. The first volume discusses the history of the Mongolian conquests of the 13th century and leads up to the accession of the throne of Argun, the fourth Il-Khan (683-689/1284-1291).
