ONE hot summer Adelaide afternoon, a boy named Luke goes missing on his tenth birthday while visiting Seacliff Beach with his uncle. There are no clues and the police quickly run out of leads. The story revolves around his uncles mixed efforts to determine what happened to the boy. The plot, covering the four seasons, is essentially a crime story of detection and exposure with social, cultural and political undercurrents. Set in the present tense and through flashbacks, the uncle/narrator’s voice is the hub that ties together the various strands.

Struggling with his own listless, directionless life, the narrator is desperate to atone for failing in his duty of care for a boy. One character is Seacliff itself, set against the background of Adelaide’s notoriety for mysterious child disappearances and murders. The story examines the tissue-thin sensitivities in a comfortable beachside suburb that suddenly finds itself thrust into the police and media spotlight.
